About the Giraffe

A coloured pencil study of the white rhino, one of the worlds largest land mammals. Their striking horns and thick armor like skin are extremely interesting textures to draw. This species of rhino are quite social and choose to live in herds of around twelve individuals, predominantly across the grasslands and open savanna of South Africa. In the wild, the rhinos only predator are humans. Rhinos are hunted and killed for their horns, with the intention of using them for ornamental carving and traditional medicine, despite there being no medicinal value to them as they are made of keratin. Organisations across the globe are helping to spread awareness of the illegal rhino horn trade, placing scouts around the rhinos habitats to identify would-be poachers and working with governments to strengthen the law enforcement to protect rhinos.
