Using professional quality coloured pencils on hot pressed watercolour paper, this portrait captures the profile of a clouded leopard. Their markings are very distinct, named after the large cloud like spots on their body, they are quite different to the leopard or jaguar patterns.
I love creating a piece that draws all the focus to the animal, with a stark contrast between the soft warm fur and the white paper.
These beautiful and mysterious cats live in forests across southeast Asia and China including the foothills of the Himalayas. Their population is declining due to habitat loss making them vulnerable. Clouded leopards are good swimmers and may have populated small islands off Vietnam and Borneo in this way.
