About this drawing

I’ve always been in awe of the reindeer’s amazing velvet coated antlers, sitting on their heads like a crown. They are often overlooked as a subject to draw or paint unless related to the Christmas period, but I wanted to create a portrait without this tie allowing the viewer to appreciate their stunning appearance away from all the snowy festive scenes.

About the Reindeer

Although the reindeer population is stable, they are still threatened by dangers we are causing or contributing to. Climate change is effecting their habitat as the Arctic warms, the vegetation patterns are shifting causing different plants to grow. Additional rain and warmer winters result in plants being covered with ice instead of snow. These changes are also shifting the migration patterns, meaning that it will be important for governments to implement plans to support wildlife and ecosystems, along side monitoring hunting quotas to ensure a healthy population is maintained.
